Best Practices While Using Zoom
- Join early to test your microphone and camera before the course starts.
- Mute your audio when you aren't talking.
- Turn off your camera if you step away from your computer.
- Make sure you have good internet connection. Use speedtest.net to test your connection.
- Set up your workspace in a quiet room.
- Use multiple monitors if screen sharing.
Creating Breakout Rooms
- Create breakout rooms to increase engagement between your students.
- Assign students manually or automatically in Zoom.
- Broadcast messages to all the breakout rooms at once
- Join breakout rooms to assist students and check their progress.
- Close all rooms automatically.
Participant Controls for Facilitators
- When a student enters or exits the Zoom meeting, the chime that plays can be turned off.
- A facilitator has the control to mute all students.
- A waiting room can be created to allow full control over who can gain access to the Zoom meeting.
- Students' screen sharing and chat capabilities can be turned off.
- The facilitator has the power to remove students from the group and block them.
Create a Poll
- Polls can be created before the meeting starts and saved until they need to be used.
- Both the host and cohost can start a poll.
- Only the person logged in under the @mitacsworkshop.com email address will be able to edit.
- Polls with multiple questions can be created.
- Instantly see the results and share them with the group.
Delete and Block a Student
- Use the added security features to ensure your course runs smoothly.
- Select specific students to remove from the Zoom meeting.
- Once removed, these students will not be able to re-enter.
Adjust your Audio and Video Settings
- Test your audio and video settings before the course starts.
- It is recommended to use a headset or direct audio connection to reduce background noise and interference.
- It is recommended to set up your workspace in a quiet room to minimize distractions to others.
- Set your video settings or chose an external camera.
- Set virtual backgrounds and touch up your appearance.
Screen Sharing on Zoom
- Engage your audience by sharing materials, websites, or videos with them.
- Screen sharing can be used with any programs and to show videos.
Test your Internet Speed Before using Zoom
- Use speedtest.net to test your internet connection before joining the Zoom meeting.
- The upload and download Mbps should be a minimum of three to ensure a steady connection.
- It is recommended to join the internet from your home Wi-Fi, as public Wi-Fi can be unreliable.
Waiting Rooms
- Waiting rooms can be used to increase security in Zoom meetings.
- A facilitator has full control over who can enter the group.
Turn Off/On your Audio and Video
- It is recommended to turn off your audio when you are not speaking.
- Turn off your camera if you step away from your computer to avoid distractions to others.
Switch from Gallery to Speaker View
- Gallery view will show all the participants on the screen at once.
- Speaker view switches between the current active speakers on the screen.
- Hide non-video participants from your gallery view.
- Pin a video if you want to focus your video feed on one participant.
